The University of Georgia received a five-year, $10 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences to establish a research and development center that will provide national leadership on best practices for using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in schools, strengthening competence in GenAI in middle school science classrooms.

MSAI student Chan Lu is an inaugural winner of the ASCEND award given by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Funds for this award are raised by Franklin's Board of Advisors. Chan will have access to $5,000 to engage in professional training, internships, and the conference participation needed to succeed in careers beyond the academy.

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) — and artificial neural networks in particular — have long been a source of fascination in automotive R & D. This interest stems from the striking contrast between the traditionally cautious, hardware-driven, and highly regulated automotive industry, and the fast-paced high tech industry driving software innovation. Dr. Prokhorov will share an eyewitness account of intelligent vehicle research, highlighting key milestones and lessons learned. His presentation will also outline important directions for future research.

Danil V Prokhorov, Ph.D.- Director of Future Research Department, Toyota Motor North America R & D

Dr. Danil Prokhorov has been involved in research and planning for various intelligent technologies, such as highly automated vehicles, AI and other futuristic systems at Toyota Motor NA R&D since 2005. He is the director of future research department in Toyota Motor North America R & D in Ann Arbor, MI. His department demonstrated the feasibility of autonomous driving on public roads in 2011. His department’s efforts in personal flying mobility were pioneering for Toyota, allowing the company to join forces with Joby Aviation in 2020. He has served as a panel expert for NSF, NAE, DOE, ARPA, SAE for 30 years. He was a board member of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Society, and he is in the leadership of the International Neural Network Society (INNS). He is also a recipient of 2019 INNS Dennis Gabor Award. Prior to joining Toyota, he was with the Ford Scientific Research Laboratory in Dearborn, Michigan.
