Image: As the first twenty-five years of the third millenia comes to an end, IAI welcomes the next twenty-five with a call to develop and deploy responsible and safe AI. Toward this, IAI has proposed the study of ethics for AI as a research convergence theme for UGA. This is sparked by an interdisciplinary team, seeded by UGA's 2023 Presidential Interdisciplinary Grant Program and led by Law faculty Christian Turner, engaging in the study for over a year.Team member and IAI faculty fellow Ari Schlesinger (Computing) successfully leveraged the seed funding to survey AI use in the legal professions and to win a Google Research award on AI safety. Ari and her collaborator from Adelaide University will develop training modules for understanding and promoting safe use of AI models. Through an upcoming seminar by a Willson Center Distinguished Artist Andrea Knowlton, Departmen of Dance and IAI will explore AI for the arts and its role in facilitating responsible improvisation in the performing arts. At least two teams, backed by IAI's seed grants, are launching investigations into the responsible use of LLM models within public health and public opinion surveying, ensuring data integrity and community safety. With all this momentum, UGA looks forward to collaboratively shaping the public discourse on AI adoption.
