PhD and MS Assistantships in Artificial Intelligence

(PDF)

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Georgia is searching for Ph.D.- or M.S.-level

graduate students to conduct basic and applied research in projects managed by the Institute, including PERSEUS, a USDA-funded project investigating forest management and sustainability. The specific research focus will be structured to align with project goals as well as the successful candidate’s interests and strengths.

Research Assistant positions are available beginning Summer (June) or Fall (August) 2023 and include an annual stipend and tuition waiver. Subject to availability of funds and continued adequate performance, M.S. students will be funded for two years, and Ph.D. students will be funded for three years. Interested students should email Dr. Frederick Maier (fmaier@uga.edu), Associate Director of the AI Institute, or Dr. Khaled Rasheed, Director of the AI Institute and Professor of Computer Science, with a brief statement of interest and resume. Applications must be submitted to the University of Georgia Graduate School: https://grad.uga.edu/admissions/apply-now/.

Required qualifications:

  • A prior bachelor’s or graduate degree in computer science, AI, or a degree in a field closely related to one of the Institute’s partner departments.
  • Strong programming skills and experience with quantitative methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • An ability to engage in interdisciplinary research, both independently and in teams.

For PERSEUS, the Institute is particularly interested in 1) applicants with a background in machine learning and experience with multi-scale, multi-temporal data acquired by sensors on terrestrial, aerial, and satellite platforms; 2) applicants with experience developing web-based systems, including decision support and visualization systems; and applicants with experience creating educational materials for traditional students and practitioners.

Georgia is well-known for its quality of life, both in terms of outdoor and urban activities (www.georgia.gov). The University of Georgia (www.uga.edu) is a land/sea/space grant institution comprised of 18 schools and colleges. Athens is a diverse community of approximately 150,000 people located 65 miles from Atlanta. UGA enrolls about 40,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence (www.ai.uga.edu) is a research and instructional unit under the Franklin College of Arts and sciences. It has over 50 participating Faculty Fellows, including distinguished professors and department heads, from 23 different departments across 8 colleges at UGA. The Faculty Fellows conduct research on a wide range of both fundamental and applied Artificial Intelligence topics. In addition, the Institute oversees the interdisciplinary M.S. and Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence degree programs as well as the A.B. in Cognitive Science. The M.S. and Ph.D. programs (the latter newly approved in 2022) are among the few interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence programs in the United States. Collectively, our academic programs serve approximately 400 students per year.
