The Institute Local Area Network and PAWS

The IAI LAN is the wired local-area network within the Institute. It connects the PCs and printers in our offices or labs. There is no direct wireless access to it (see however Campus VPN below). PAWS-Secure is the campus wireless network, which you will typically use with your laptop. It has no special privileges with the IAI servers.

To use PAWS-Secure, you will need your UGA MyID and password.

The Campus VPN is a way of connecting to UGA computers from anywhere in the world and proving that you are a member of the UGA community. See below.

Remote Desktop Access

Remote Desktop Protocol gives you a window on your screen which functions as the screen of another Windows computer. Remote computers can be accessed in this way. You have a secure, encrypted path to the IAI computer, and you can copy and paste files or other material back and forth between the remote computer and your PC.

On a Windows PC, the Remote Desktop Connection client software is already installed. There are also versions for Apple and Android-based PCs, tablets, and smart phones.

Certain AI Institute machines are set up to allow logins via remote desktop connections. In order to log into them, you must either be on the Institute LAN or else connected to UGA's VPN (see below). If that's the case, then you simply specify the IP address or URL of the machine to connect to and provide your user name and password. You will typically need to include a domain name (e.g., "MYID\") in front of your user name.

Using the Campus VPN (Enterprise VPN)

The University of Georgia Campus VPN (Enterprise VPN) is a way of establishing a secure, authenticated connection to the campus network from anywhere in the world.

The only thing at the IAI that requires the Campus VPN is remote desktop access. If you want to access one of our computers remotely, and you are not within our LAN, you need to be on the Campus VPN even if you are on campus.

The campus VPN does not use traditional VPN technology. Instead it uses Cisco AnyConnect, which tunnels through TCP port 443 rather than the high-numbered ports normally used. The advantage of this is that the campus VPN is very unlikely to be blocked by firewalls no matter where you are.

You must install Cisco AnyConnect client software on your computer. You can obtain this free (if you have a UGA MyID and password) in either of two ways. In many cases, the web page will lead you through a successful automatic installation process. If that doesn't work, or if you'd rather do things manually, you can download the client software from There is client software for Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and other operating systems.

Once you have Cisco AnyConnect installed, here's the process:

  1. Launch Cisco AnyConnect and connect to using your MyID and password.
  2. Do your work, interacting with machines via RDP.
  3. Once finished, open Cisco AnyConnect again and tell it to disconnect from the VPN.

The last step is so that you do not send network traffic through UGA without meaning to. If you have a VPN connection open, any data packets from your computer could be routed through it.
