Bringing your laptop into the AI Center

Revised 2005 September 30

Artificial Intelligence Center

The University of Georgia

To use your laptop in the AI Center, you'll need to:

(1) Connect to the Internet through the UGA campus network.

This requires an 802.11b-compatible wireless adapter and a UGa MyID (user name and password).

To connect, tell your wireless adapter to use the UGA network, and then open your web browser. You will be prompted for your MyID user name and password. The first time you do this, you will also have to install a security certificate.

(2) Connect to the AI Center network through VPN.

To do this, download and install our VPN software on your laptop, then activate it and give your AI Center user name and password. More details are given here (user name and password are required to view the documentation).

The VPN connection gives you access to your files (e.g., \\ai0.ai.uga.edu\users\your_name) and the AI Center printers (such as \\ai0.ai.uga.edu\hp4300).

Note that when using VPN, you must write ai0.ai.uga.edu, not just ai0.

IMPORTANT: YOUR LAPTOP MUST BE VIRUS-FREE and running current antivirus software before you connect it. No exceptions!
Do not try to add your laptop to our domain. That's for machines that we own and maintain only. Roaming user profiles can be corrupted by moving to and from a computer that we do not maintain.
Guests of the University who do not have passwords cannot use the network.

However, if a University of Georgia account holder and a guest are working together, there is no reason why the UGa person cannot do the logging in.

Do not give your password to another person - instead, type it on their computer when they're using it in your immediate presence.

Guests who visit regularly should apply for a MyID (at helpdesk@uga.edu) and an AI Center account.
